Oh Hyun-gyu’s rise in position… 1 Celtic striker sent out
Striker Giorgios Yakomakis (28), who was one of the rivals of Oh Hyun-kyu (21), who joined Celtic, is leaving the team.
Reporter Fabrizio Romano, an expert in the transfer market, reported on the 5th (Korean time) that Yakomakis’ transfer negotiations to join Atalanta United of the American Major League Soccer 스포츠토토(MLS) have been completed.
The contract is for three years, and Celtic will receive a transfer fee of £4.3 million in exchange for Yakomakis.
Yakomakis, who joined Celtic in the 2021-22 season, recorded 9 goals and 1 assist in 19 games, and 6 goals and 1 assist in 19 games last season. He played as a backup striker behind Japanese national striker Kyogo Furuhashi.
However, as Celtic recruited Oh Hyun-kyu, who is in the same position in the winter transfer market, his position decreased.
Celtic paid 2.5 million pounds to Suwon Samsung when they recruited Oh Hyun-gyu.
By transferring Yakomakis, who was recruited as a free agent, he made up for the transfer fee for Oh Hyun-kyu and left a profit at the same time.
Oh Hyun-gyu made his Celtic debut as a substitute in a match against Dundee United on the 30th of last month, becoming the first Korean player to wear a Celtic uniform after 10 years and 8 months since Cha Doo-ri in May 2012.
With Yakomakis leaving, it is expected that more playing time will be secured through cup competitions.
