Messi’s goal was the fastest of his career. The previous record was 2 minutes and 46 seconds after kickoff against Nigeria in 2014.
It was one of Messi’s trademark goals. After receiving a pass from Fernandez, Messi cut in from the front of the arc with two defenders in front of him, then unleashed his trademark short cut and slap left-footed shot. The ball left his feet, curled and stretched, and found the corner of the Australian goal. Goalkeeper Matthew Ryan knew the trajectory but was unable to keep out the shot from so far out.
Argentina took a 2-0 lead over Australia thanks to Messi’s goal 72 seconds into the match and German Pezzella’s goal 24 minutes into the second half. The second half is now underway.
