A pitcher in the minor leagues was hit directly by a 171-kilometer fastball. Luckily, it didn’t lead to any major injuries.

Joey Lucchesi of the Syracuse Mets’ Triple-A affiliate, the New York Mets, started a game against the Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Triple-A affiliate of the Philadelphia Phillies) on July 31 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania.

Luchesi nearly got himself into trouble in the bottom of the fifth inning, trailing 3-4. After striking out leadoff hitter Weston Wilson, he walked Christian Pacheco on an infield single to shortstop. Pache stole second. With runners on first and second, he faced Aramis Garcia. Garcia’s pitch streaked toward Luchesi like a laser beam.

Luchesi instinctively tried to get his glove on it, but the pitch was too fast. The line drive hit Luchesi and deflected toward third base. Third baseman Nick Mayer calmly fielded the grounder and ran to the mound to check on Luchesi.

Luchesi wasn’t down. He sat up on one knee and groped his chest, neck, and shoulders with his right hand, seemingly checking himself out. The slow-mo video showed that the ball had hit him just below his left collarbone. The ball traveled a whopping 106.3 mph, according to Major League Baseball’s official website.

Luchesi scrambled to his feet and accomplished his mission. He got Cody Clemens to ground out to second base to end the fifth inning. Luchesi finished the game with five innings and four runs.

After the game, Luchesi said, “It happened so fast. I was in shock, I had a lot of adrenaline, I didn’t feel anything,” he said, explaining why he was able to continue pitching.

“When the game was over, Luchesi was mostly fine except for a pink scar on his chest,” MLB.com reported.

Luchesi went 6-5 with a 4.31 ERA in 16 minor league games this season. He was called up to the majors and went 2-0 with a 3.54 ERA in six games and 28 innings, allowing 11 runs.토토사이트
