Including active big leaguers Moncada and Robert… Cuba Announces 50 WBC Reserves
Cuba has released a preliminary list of 50 players for the 2023 World Baseball Classic (WBC), including two active major leaguers.
The Cuban Baseball Federation announced a preliminary entry consisting of 25 pitchers and 25 fielders on the 7th (Korean time).
As the Major League Secretariat, which supervises the WBC, allowed Cuban baseball players who defected to the United States to participate in the WBC, 13 players with experience in American professional baseball, including two active big leaguers, were included in the preliminary list.
Among the 50 players selected by Cuba for the reserve list, two active big leaguers are infielder Yoann Moncada and outfielder Luis Robert (above Chicago White Sox).
Moncada, who immigrated to Guatemala with permission from the Cuban government in 2014, obtained permanent residency and signed a contract with an American club, so he is not classified as an “exiled player.”
On the other hand, Robert is an exiled player who escaped Cuba in November 2016 to play in the major leagues.
Andy Ibanez (Detroit Tigers) and Yoan Lopez (New York Mets), who travel between the major and minor leagues as “exiles from Cuba,” were also selected for the 50-man roster.
Nine players from Nippon Professional Baseball were also included.
Players who play in the core bullpen of their team, such as Livan Moinello (Softbank Hawks), Rydel Martinez, and Yariel Rodriguez (above Chunichi Dragons), are particularly eye-catching. 토토사이트
Cuba is in Group A of the 2023 WBC and will meet the Netherlands, Italy, Panama and Taiwan in turn in Taiwan from March 8-12.
If they place in second place in Group A, they will play against the first or second place in Group B (Korea, Japan, Australia, Czech Republic, China) in the quarterfinals at Tokyo Dome, Japan.
There is also a possibility that Korea and Cuba will face each other over tickets to the semifinals.
